My Manifesto !

Karim Rashid’s point,  “Normal is not good” speaks to me the most because I always think the same way. Actually I agree not only this one, but I have more resonance with “Normal is not good”. I especially dislike those reinforcers who always concurring other’s opinions. I feel they are fake and doesn’t have their own point of view. Then what they are living for? People live in this world because they are living for a meaning of life. Reinforcers live in a life of copying other’s lifestyles. Don’t satisfy with being normal because being normal is nothing good. Not anyone is born to be outstanding but we should always trying to be. I’m looking for a way to be unique and outstanding, I want to be in a good status. That’s what I always tell myself. Here are my manifestos:
1. Don’t easily trust others who you are not familiar with.
2. Don’t doubt your ability and be confident.
3. Watch good movies and learn meaning from them.
4. Be optimistic and then good luck will come to you
5. Ignore what others say about you and do what you think is right.
6. How much you gain is how much you paid.
7. Never stop chasing dream just because that’s hard.
8. Keep a good weekly schedule and plan.
9. Never regret about those things already past.
10. Be brave and keep thinking every minute !!!

What's your Freak Factors?

After reading David Rendall’s FREAK FACTOR: Discovering Uniqueness by Flaunting Weakness, I learn several new ways to overcome my weakness. I think some of his suggestions are quite useful to me.
First suggestion that I’d like to talk about is “What’s your problem?” In this part, Rendall asked that do people aware of what their weaknesses are. Everyone around you might have criticism and judgements on you and that will let you think if yourself really have some problems. Then what should you do in order to respond to it? He offered an instruction: The most common choice is to build on strengths and fix weaknesses. This is prevalent at work where annual appraisals are focused on overcoming our apparent limitations. People are usually expected to do good in all areas like study and social skills. People need to be well-rounded. However, these efforts do not work, and being well-rounded is not a worthy or realistic goal. From my personal perspective, His suggestions of building on strengths and fix weaknesses works.
The second opinion he offers is “What’s my problem?”. Author provided a list of his weaknesses and he doesn’t even think those weaknesses should be fixed. Because he thinks his uniqueness should own to his weaknesses. Even with these weaknesses, He’s been able to achieve a moderate level of success. He discovered that his apparent flaws were clues to his true strengths. He’s three important tips are:
1. There is nothing wrong with you. Weaknesses are important clues to your strengths.
2. You find success when you find the right fit. You need to match your unique characteristics to situations that reward those qualities.
3. Your weaknesses make you different. They make you a freak and it’s good to be a freak.
I think his suggestion is valid because sometimes I feel the same way. If you don’t have any weaknesses, then you’re just too perfect. And in this whole world, there is no perfect people exist. What does that mean? That means too perfect cannot fit in this world. To my point of view, being too perfect is being a freak. Everyone should have some weaknesses, and just because their weaknesses make them a different from others. Weaknesses are your characteristics. We should be unique and we need to be.
Another suggestions I think is valid is “Foundation: Build on your strengths”. He said, your strengths are patterns of passion and proficiency. They are what you love to do. He stated three important opinions that I think we should always remember: It feels good, build on your strengths is enjoyable and energizing to work on your strengths. You have the greatest potential in your areas of strength. These are your natural gifts and provide you with your best chances for success.Your strengths make up for your weaknesses. Well-developed strengths often make your weaknesses irrelevant. I personally think if someone seeks out something good in him, he should carry on the good things and expand them to make himself a better person. And for some weaknesses, people just born to have those. And there is no way to overcome those weaknesses. I also have a lot of weaknesses. I have acrophobia; I’m afraid of look into deep sea; I’m afraid of snake and etc. These weaknesses are those I born to have, and I have no idea how I could overcome them. Actually, there is no need for I to overcome this, trying to overcome those weaknesses just a waste of time. The only thing people need to do is to build on strengths. Find something precious in you and make good things happen.

9A.Reflections on the Gaming presentation

We did a gaming presentation in Friday’s lab last week. We were showing the ideas of our strategy game about college life. We explained our characters, audios, gaming rules and mechanics.
In our gaming presentation, I think we did a great job on classifying our game characters. The five social circles that we think are interesting and fit the real college life. And we create the sample of our characters. Their outfit, hairstyle, accessories and etc identify them clearly. These elements are showing the tradition of American college life especially for me as a foreigner. I think target the potential players for game is an important job during creation. Unfortunately, we don’t clear explain our game’s goal and how our game is fun to play on the presentation.  I think the additional important goal of our game is let people experience American college life. For example, I had not ideas about American college life before I came to American. When I still in China, I was afraid about what would happen when I arrived here. If there was a game like ours at that time, I could play and see what were the common characters and events that would happen in the future. I think I might get lots of help from these kinds a game at that time. So our game can especially help the players who are outside of this country and want to know American or American college.
I think the most difficult thing to discuss with others is the rules because the rule is too broad to discuss. We only can show a little bit part of the rules during presentation. During our creating process, every member can come out several rules each day, the rules are so detail and we need a lot of time to organize them and category them. For example, there are rules of leveling up, there are rule of completing missions, also there are rule to moving in the virtual world and etc. Hence, I think the rule is the difficult think to discuss and complete. All in all, I pretty like our ideas of game and I feel confident of it.

8B.Reflection on the Hero/Villain assignment

The first hero and villain that I want to compare are from Capri &Lauren. http://mdia203capri.blogspot.com/2011/05/nightnurse-vs-biohazard.html. In this group, the hue and saturation of hero and villain were fair. They both used black plus one warm color so these two characters had strong contrast. Also, they were using complementary hue creates these hero and villain. For example the hero was wearing pink shirt, pants and black cape. Pink and black were two hues that are opposite on the color wheel. In Capri &Lauren’s animation, they used straight ahead action to create characters’ movement. Fist of all, the villain tried to hurt the girl then the girl was screaming. After she completed her movement, the hero appeared and fried from the sky and stop behind the girl. Each character’s movement happened when the last character completed his/her movement. As difference, Capri let the villain were wearing a black eye patch, which is a symbol of bad people. Also the yellow color teeth and eyes make this character seems evil.

The second hero and villain that I want to compare are from Katie and Maddie. http://mcschneidy.blogspot.com/2011/05/animation-time.html. Their villain Psycho was wearing black hat, black suit, purple glass and purple shirt. These cold hues made Sonica look as a villain. We could not see his actual facial expression and also he has moustache. These details were all the symbol of evil. Their hero Sonica was wearing light yellow clothes, blue shoes and blue hand glove. The saturation of her image was strong and the warm hues made Sonica full fill the sense of justice. During their battle, they are using overlapping actions. The movements of both characters brought the weight of the scene. The hero and villain were using different strong power to fight each other such as the purple fire behind the villain.

The third hero and villain that I want to compare are from Brendan and Maggie. They only post hero on the blog at this time so I only can analyze the hero from Brendan. Here is the post link http://bctrepal.blogspot.com/2011/05/character-and-animation.html. I like this hero because he looks like iron man. The grey hue and grey mask made me feel mysterious about this hero. And the yellow color built the positive impression to him at the same time. These colors made me think he was a hero with mystique and sense of justice. The light of his image was bright but there were some shadows under his mask and cover his body. The shadow under his mask also helped create the sense of mystique. The shadow on his body make his muscles were seemed more obviously. It made him seems stronger and full of power. Overall, I pretty like this hero.
